Phantasy Star Online 2 is a free-to-play MMO RPG with a focus on group combat, similar to that of massively multiplayer online role-playing games like World of Warcraft. The game’s campaign is set in the distant future of the Phantasy Star universe. At the center of the story is a conflict between two galactic powers, the Algo Empire and the New Empire, each with their own goals, strategies, and war strategies. As the story progresses, you are tasked with the duty of fulfilling the goals of the New Empire against the Algo Empire.

Sega has been one of the stars of the Japanese gaming industry for many years now, and as such, they’ve seen their fair share of Japanese gaming franchises grow and thrive. Phantasy Star Online 2 (PSO2) was one such franchise, and it has since grown into a massive success outside of Japan. Now, it seems that the developers at Sega and their marketing wing, Index, have decided to celebrate the series’ 15th anniversary by bringing over the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise to the game.

Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis mars its Sonic crossover event with high-dollar cosmetics

It could have been a pleasant little thing, combining the Sonic franchise with Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis, but Sega chose to take a lovely thing and turn it into a cause of player irritation, much like giving someone a wonderful ice cream cone and jabbing the sharp end into their eyes.

Here’s what’s going on: The game is now running a crossover event that rewards players with cosmetics, boost goods, and stamps for performing various activities, including as retweeting a tweet, joining an alliance, and chatting in party chat. However, one set of cosmetics from the “Treat Chao’self” series of activities can only be obtained by spending more than 10,000 AC; purchasing enough AC to acquire all of these things needs a $100 purchase. There are other emotes that can only be obtained by purchasing a Premium Set.

Needless to say, the players are dissatisfied with this aspect of the competition. “For that amount, you could purchase Sonic Colors Ultimate twice and still have $20 left over. One comment on the Reddit post says, “Absolutely absurd.” Another player’s reaction on Twitter says, “I don’t have the energy to be sarcastic, so I’ll just state that I am very dissatisfied with NGS’s path thus far.”

Furthermore, there have been instances of inexplicable account suspensions circulating. The idea is that gamers are being harassed in large numbers through many alt accounts (aka red boxing). It was also believed that bans would be imposed automatically, however Sega has categorically refuted this. Overall, it’s not a great moment to be an NGS fan.

Since its launch, Sega has been releasing a variety of Sonic the Hedgehog-themed avatar items and cosmetic items (called “Robot Parts” and “Pearl Parts”, respectively). And this year, the company is debuting a special item that lets fans dress up as Sonic and Tails “in full costume” at New Genesis, the planet where the game takes place..
