After 10 years, the series that has defined fighting games for the last decade is finally returning to the arcades. Virtua Fighter 5 is a fighting game from the makers of Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown, the most successful 3D fighter on the market. Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown is the ultimate version of the game, combining both the past and the future of the franchise, with a revamped fighting system and new features.

Virtua Fighter 5 is one of the most beloved 3D fighting games of all time, and fans of the series have been anxiously waiting for Virtua Fighter 5 to return for years. In 2011, the original 3D fighter finally made its way to arcades for the first time in a decade, and fans loved it. Now, the game is back on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and it’s bigger and badder than ever.

It’s been five years since the last VF game released. In that time, the fighting game market has moved so far away from the traditional 2D fighters of old that a return to the franchise’s roots would be a tough sell. So how do you revive a franchise that is as old as fighting games themselves? By packaging it in a new, modern take on the 2D fighting genre that’s updated to look and play like a proper 3D fighter.. It has been over five years since the release of Virtua Fighter 5, the last true sequel to the original 3D arcade action game. So Sega’s rather unexpected release of Virtual Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown on PlayStation was both a surprising and welcome move. Unlike the original VF5, which was very cross-platform, this game is only available on Sony, with a free PS Plus selection to boot. That said, for most PS4 and PS5 owners, there’s no reason not to watch the glory of one of the best 3D action movies of all time. Virtua Fighter originally appeared in 1993, amidst a sea of Street Fighter games and endless clones. The voluminous polygon graphics and simplistic punch/kick/protection controls hid the sophistication and realism that 2D action games lacked. There have been many other fighting games released in 3D over the years, but none felt as fluid and natural.

Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown Preview: The original 3D fighter returns and defeats

. The pacing, animations, and more grounded combat system seem impeccable after all these years. The near-mastery of VF5 continues Sega’s legacy, and while the game is certainly a bit ragged around the edges, it’s surprisingly fun and intuitive to play. The 20 characters, many of which have been around since the original game, are well designed and fit almost every play style (except maybe the fireball throwers, which they don’t here). They look great, even if the graphics aren’t as modern as they used to be, but it’s the smooth animations that make everything work so well. These fighters move like skilled dancers and react to your actions with lightning speed. Despite the distinct lack of supernatural moves like in other fighting games, each character’s fighting style offers a wide variety of attacks, throws, and countermoves. Virtua Fighter has always had an innovative counter-move and throw system, and counter-attacking and throwing the opponent can be a crucial strategy. Ultimate Showdowncontains the usual selection of game modes. Arcade and Training modes allow solo players to hone their skills against AI fighters or simply learn to play privately. Of course, it’s possible to play in pairs on the couch, but the heart of the game really lies in the ranking and networking modes. Besides individual matches (or multiple matches against the same opponent), there are also tournaments and leagues in which up to 16 players compete for the title of best fighter. The online interface is quite simple and even allows you to practice or watch matches while waiting for the game to start. In the game you compete against other players of your level. The more matches you win, the more chances you have to increase your personal rank. There’s certainly no deep plot here or other virtues inherent in more plot-driven action films. Virtua Fighter 5 focuses on the ease with which players can compete against each other, one on one.

Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown Review – The Conclusion

  • Effective and fast-acting control mechanisms
  • Large selection of characters and fighting styles
  • Great online game
  • Free for PS+ members.

  • The HD remaster is good but shows its age.
  • There’s not a lot of extra material or plot.
  • Only on PlayStation
  • Not yet Virtua Fighter 6

Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown is a welcome addition to PS4 and PS5, especially considering it’s been years since a game VF . Basically, this remaster serves to whet our appetites for the prospect of a full Virtua Fighter 6sequel, but it’s worth playing for the clean, responsive combat. [Note: The PlayStation Plus version of Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown was used for this test].
